Background

Chloe Nam (17) is a senior at Northside College Preparatory High School. She began playing the flute at age seven , and since moving to Chicago, Chloe has developed a deep passion for flute performance under the mentorship of Hideko Amano. Her artistry has also been shaped through masterclasses with renowned flutists including Jennifer Gunn, Jonathan Keeble, Aleksandr Haskin, and Nancy Stagnitta.  Chloe was an Alice S. Pfaelzer Conservatory Scholar at the Merit School of Music and a fellow of the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative,  a selective scholarship and mentorship program supporting young classical musicians from underrepresented backgrounds.

Chloe has been recognized in numerous competitions. She was a finalist in the Crain-Maling Foundation Young Artists Competition, making her solo debut with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago at Symphony Center, and has been featured on WFMT’s Introductions program. She won first place in the Senior Division of the Chicago Flute Club Student Competition and has been honored at national and international competitions, including the DePaul National Concerto Festival, Music International Grand Prix, and the American Protégé International Woodwinds and Brass Competition, where her second-place finish led to an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall.

Orchestra

Chloe Nam is the principal flutist of the flagship Symphony Orchestra of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO) and an avid chamber musician with the CYSO CORE Chamber Orchestra. As principal flute of the CORE Chamber Orchestra, Chloe took part in the recording of Classical Kids Live: St. George’s Sword and Bow. More recently, she performed at Lollapalooza Chicago with Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, marking the first-ever solo orchestra appearance at the festival, and joined the Symphony Orchestra’s concert tour of Spain. Performances in Valladolid, Utrera, Granada, and Córdoba included a partnership with La Asociación Contra el Cáncer, raising funds for cancer research, and an invitation to the prestigious Granada Festival of Music and Dance, where the orchestra was praised as “one of the best youth orchestras in the world.”

Volunteer Musician and Hobby

As a volunteer with   Sharing Notes , a Chicago-based nonprofit that connects musicians with healthcare facilities, Chloe shares live music at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital and neighborhood memory care centers, performing for patients, families, and staff. At school, she serves on the board of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, frequently accompanies the choir, and contributes to the annual musical as a pit orchestra flutist.

Beyond music, Chloe is passionate about chemistry, mathematics, and programming. She enjoys exploring how these disciplines intersect with creativity and problem-solving. In her free time, she finds balance through nature walks, baking, and arts and crafts.
